Could the "box of candy" possibly be Masefield's Box of Delights? It MIGHT be Earthstar Magic, but I'm not sure. Yes yes this was the book I was looking for! It was written in storybook style with dialogue and I'm almost certain the teacher didn't say it had anything to do with reincarnation or real life (we heard it in the late 1970s).

That book is Alexander and the Magic Mouse. Jason has hardly any memory, and does not recognize either of them. So many people remember this book with love but can't recall the title. Since one can say "Plain Jane," I think I must have stored this information away in my mind as leading to her name being "Simplicity Jane."
